2006 Highlights

This marks the second full year since the Public works and Engineering departments merged forming a new Public Works Department with four different divisions; Engineering, Operations, Forestry & Grounds and Water & Wastewater.  The Public Works remodeling project continues with Phase III improvements in the shop/vehicle area.  Special projects completed this year include painting the guardrail along both North Frontage Road and 79th Street.  In early spring, Public Works held their second annual Public Works Open House and introduced their mascot "Hank the Husky", named by one of the participants, Lorena Miranda, age 11, who attended the event.

Engineering Division highlights included overseeing completion and providing construction inspection of the 2005 Road Program and the 87th Street water main extension.  We designed and oversaw completion of the 91st Street and Plainfield Road sidewalk extensions and oversaw construction of the federal grant funded 83rd Street resurfacing project.  This division monitored the progress and completion of the Cook County Highway Department resurfacing of 79th Street, German Church Road and Wolf Road.  We completed phase II of the three phase GIS project including hiring and training interns for GPS data collection.  We provided input and assistance on planning needs for the Village Hall and Police Department building and oversaw Phase II remodeling of the Public Works Building which included the roof and exterior of the building.  The Street Condition Survey was completed and the 2006 Road Program was designed.  Year three NPDES Phase II assigned goals was completed and the existing 1999 Ford Taurus was replaced with a new Ford Explorer.  We designed and oversaw construction of the sewer bypass at Chasemoor Lift Station.  Acquisition of final plat records for Village wide use was completed.  This division oversaw engineering of the extension of 71st Street and developed a plan and cost estimate for the reconstruction of Forest Hill Road from 79th Street to 77th Street.  Finally, this division conducted a case study on the effectiveness of the traffic calming installations along 72nd Street and Chasemoor Drive.

Operations Division highlights included assisting in Phase II construction of the Public Works Building Improvements and oversaw replacement of the flat section of the Village Hall roof and roof shingle repairs with gutter installation.  The Village two way radio system was upgraded and purchases of small tools, copier/fax machine and automotive scan tool used to expand diagnostic repairs of Village vehicles.  We formalized and provided in-house training for snow plow operations.

Forestry & Grounds Division highlights included overseeing plantings along County Line Road in accordance with agreement between the Village and Cook County Highway Department.  We continue to update our tree inventory and are developing a plan for emergency brush chipping operations.  The native plant maintenance at Windsor Pond continues and landscape improvements were completed at the 83rd Street Water Tower.  This division purchased small tools including metal detector, chain saw, power auger and mower jack.

Water & Wastewater Division highlights included overseeing repair of the Pump Center shingle roof, completion of Pump Center security improvements and formalized a plan for management of Village water wells and repairs as needed.  We replaced the 1994 Ford F-150 truck with a new Ford F-150 truck and acquired basic leak detection equipment to minimize use of contractual leak detection services.  We acquired a vibratory plate compactor to assist in main break repairs.  This division oversaw Pump Center reservoir maintenance inspection and cleaning and are formalizing a plan for continued systematic hydrant flushing program.
