Keeping Our Village Beautiful: Leaf Collection Tips

As the colorful autumn leaves start to fall, we'd like to share some important information about how to handle them in a way that helps our community and the environment. Here are some simple guidelines to remember:

  1. Bag Your Leaves: Please use biodegradable paper yard waste bags that are no bigger than 33 gallons. Make sure these bags weigh less than 50 pounds when you fill them with leaves.
  2. Consider Mulching: A great eco-friendly option is to mulch the leaves into your lawn or garden beds. You can do this by using a lawnmower with a mulching function, which breaks down leaves into tiny pieces. These small pieces can be used to enrich your garden beds or to nourish your lawn.
  3. Keep Leaves Off the Streets: When cleaning up leaves, avoid blowing or raking them into the streets. This practice can clog our storm sewers and lead to flooding. It's essential for both residents and landscapers to follow this guideline. If your house is near a storm sewer catch basin, help keep it clear by sweeping away leaves and debris from the sewer grate.
  4. No Burning Allowed: It's important to know that burning leaves is not permitted in our village.
  5. Yard Waste Collection: Groot, our waste collection service, picks up yard waste like grass clippings, leaves, twigs, garden debris, weeds, fruits, seeds, stalks, and vines on your regular garbage day through the second full week of December.
  6. Brush and Branches: If you have brush or branches to dispose of, please cut them down to 4 feet in length and bundle them no greater than 2 feet in diameter. Use only string or twine to bundle them; avoid using plastic or duct tape to seal your yard waste bag.
Let's work together to keep the Village beautiful and flood-free. Please mulch or dispose of your yard waste properly. Thank you for being a responsible member of our community!
